We hunted a new scrape today. This a was a fresh demolition of a historical home. I started with my Tesoro Sidewinder with a 4″ coil to deal with massive amount of metallic debris. After digging a bag full of junk and only a few coins I decided to switch to my AT Pro with a 5×8 coil. I just wanted to see what it would do on a sight with this much trash. it wasn’t too bad. I found a few more coins, the toy trailer and a ring. Too bad it was 10K GF! Towards the end of the hunt I dug up the magnetic base saint. I’ve got a NEL Snake coil on the way for the AT Pro. I think it will be an enormous improvement for trashy areas like scrapes

I got permission to hunt a cotton field next to a friends farm where an old house had once been. Didn’t find much on this trip but the cotton is already pretty high so we only hunted in the wide rows. We’ll go back after they harvest. Me and a friend (Jess) went to the TX coast this week. We spent three nights hunting various Galveston beaches. Nothing spectacular for me but plenty of targets to make it fun.  I used my Whites Surfmaster PI on this trip and found the usual handful of clad coins, toys and junk jewelry. A friend of mine was staying on a ranch about 3 hours SW of my hometown. We planned on doing some arrowhead hunting and metal detecting. I had no clue how to find this ranch so we agreed to meet at a train depot in the town nearest the ranch so that I could follow him back to it. I went to the Texas hill country to visit a friend and hunt arrowheads. I spent about four days walking, digging, detecting and even exploring an old mine shaft.

I was contacted by a friend of friend of a friend about a lost bracelet. I met the homeowner who explained that they had a big family BBQ in the backyard about two weeks prior. During the BBQ her niece lost a silver charm bracelet and was just heartsick over it. I look at the yard and notice the grass was quite short and ask if it had been mowed recently. Twice since the BBQ she said. Now I’m thinking we might be digging this bracelet up one charm at time. Luckily that wasn’t the case. In less than 10 minutes I get a signal on the XLT and part the grass to see the bracelet in a nice little clump. The girl wasn’t present when I found it but the aunt called a few days later to thank me again and tell me that her niece was ecstatic to get her bracelet back.

While metal detecting in a nearby lake with the Tesoro Stingray I dug my first class ring. It was in waist deep water and down in the clay. The clay did not wipe off easily so I couldn’t see the year at first. As I rubbed and rinsed I could see that the ring appeared like new. I hunted a yard in a nearby town today using a Garrett GTAx1000. Looking at the house you wouldn’t expect much. Average frame home built in the 50’s. I figured it might be good for some silver Rosies or the likes. As far as coins, I didn’t find any silver just wheaties and a 1953 play coin. I did, however, make an interesting find with a locket. It was corroded shut and looked to be fake. When I got home I had planned on throwing it in the junk jewelry box but after prying it opened I saw that it held a little surprise. Continue reading →
